Cambridge 2 - Burton 1 (Agg. 4-3) (Blue Square Premier playoffs, May 6, 2008) The U’s led inside 30 seconds when a Lee McEvilly shot fell for Rob Wolleaston to turn in the rebound. Daryl Clare headed Burton level after Sean Harrad flicked on John McGrath’s near post corner. But Wolleaston netted a fortuitous winner when his effort looped over Kevin Poole to secure their win. Cambridge face Exeter in the final.

Espanyol 0 - Atletico Madrid 2 (La Liga, May 8, 2008) Two goals in four first-half minutes from Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan mean Atletico have strengthened their grip on fourth place in La Liga and are only three points behind struggling Barcelona who are third with two games to play.

Catania 1 - Roma 1 (Agg. 1-2) (Coppa Italia, May 8, 2008) Roma qualify for their fourth consecutive Coppa Italia final where they will meet Inter who have been their opponents in all four finals. Alberto Aquilano put Roma in front from the penalty spot, Walter Zenga’s side equalised through Matteo Silvestri.

Heerenveen 2 - NAC 0 (Eredivisie UEFA Cup playoffs, May 8, 2008) Sub Paolo Henrique struck twice in the last 15 minutes for the hosts. Henrique broke the deadlock after NAC goalkeeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar could only parry a header from Gerald Sibon. The Brazilian added his second in the 83rd minute from another rebound.

DC United 0 - Chicago Fire 2 (MLS, May 8, 2008) Justin Mapp scored in the 38th minute for the Fire, before star Cuauhtemoc Blanco added to his reputation with a stunning 30-yard drive which sailed into the top corner.

River Plate 2 - San Lorenzo 2 (Agg. 3-4) (Copa Libertadores, May 8, 2008) Abelairas’s free-kick put River ahead after 12 minute. San Lorenzo then lost Diego Rivero for two yellow cards, and it seemed all over when they were further reduced to just nine men, Bottinelli crazily elbowed Falcao Garcia in the neck in the box and Abreu converted the penalty to send River two-up. But in an incredible turnaround, Bergessio pulled one back in the 69th minute, firing into the top corner from Diego Placente’s pass, and Bergessio equalised with a near post header from a corner four minutes later. Searching for two late goals, River had Eduardo Tuzzio sent off in injury-time for a second yellow card.
Cucuta 0 - Santos 2 (Agg. 0-3) (Copa Libertadores, May 8, 2008) Pele’s former club finally went ahead when Pereira side-footed home from a rebound in the 41st minute. Lima finished off a counter-attack for their second goal early in the second half.

Rangers 1 - Motherwell 0 (SPL, May 7, 2008) Barry Ferguson got the only goal with a great finish inside a crowded penalty box on 74 minutes. Walter Smith’s side are now four points behind Celtic with two games in hand.

Real Madrid 4 - Barcelona 1 (La Liga, May 7, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) After Barca had applauded champions Madrid onto the field, the home side scored two early goals from Raul and Robben (another rare headed goal). In the second-half Madrid doubled their lead with strikes from substitutes Higuain and Van Nistlerooy (pen), with two minutes to go Henry pulled one back for Barca, to compund Barca’s misery, Xavi was sent off late on.
Recreativo 0 - Villareal 2 (La Liga, May 7, 2008) Nihat (great free-kick) and Franco with the goals, confirmed Villareal as La Liga runners-up.
Valencia 1 - Zaragoza 0 (La Liga, May 7, 2008) Valencia should be safe from relegation with this win, David Silva got the only goal of the match.
Real Murcia 1 - Athletico Bilbao 2 (La Liga, May 7, 2008)
Getafe 4 - Almeria 2 (La Liga, May 7, 2008) Manuel Del Moral scored two as Michael Laudrup’s side came from two down to complete a crucial win in their fight against the drop.

Racing Santander 0 - Sevilla 2 (La Liga, May 7, 2008) Frederico Fazio scored two as Sevilla grabbed an important win in the race for the coveted fourth place.

Deportivo La Coruna 1 - Levante 0 (La Liga, May 7, 2008) A goal from Riki two minutes from time, gave the home side the win. But the real story of the match was that the Levante players made another protest about not being paid by standing still at the start of the game giving a Deportivo player the opportunity to run the length of the field. When he had kicked the ball out for a goal kick the game was resumed as normal.

Wagner pulled one back for the Brazilians with an acrobatic volley, but their frustration was illustrated when Ramires was sent-off in the closing stages of the tie.
Flamengo 0 - CF America 3 (Agg. 4-5) (Copa Libertadores, May 7, 2008) The Mexicans pulled off a huge shock in Joel Santana’s last game in charge of the Brazilian giants. Cabanas scored two, the first was a lovely strike, in between Esqueda poked home and late on Maldonado was sent-off for the the home side.
Sao Paolo 2 - Nacional 0 (Agg. 2-0) (Copa Libertadores, May 7, 2008) Adriano got the opener and Dagoberto completed the win late on. Sao Paolo will face Fluminense in the quarter-finals.

Borussia Dortmund 3 - Stuttgart 2 (Bundesliga, May 6, 2008) Tinga put Dortmund ahead with a snap-shot from the edge of the area. Gomez equalised on 55 minutes, only for Frei to put Borussia ahead for the second time on 57 minutes. Frei then extended the lead late on before Gomez set up a grand-stand final few minutes.
Bochum 0 - Schalke 3 (Bundesliga, May 6, 2008) Goals from Gerald Asamoah, Ivan Rakitic and Marcelo Bordon moved Schalke above Werder Bremen to second place in the Bundesliga, and on the verge of Champions League football next season.
Kaiserslautern 2 -St. Pauli 0 (Bundesliga II, May 6, 2008)

Spartak Moscow 4 - Shinnik Yaroslavl 2 (Russian Premier Liga, May 6, 2008) Monarev fired the away side into the lead but three minutes later Mozart equalised from the penalty spot. An og from Silv put Spartak in front before the same player equalised to make it 2-2. Late goals from Welliton and Pavlyuchenko gave Spartak the win by which time Shinnik Yaroslavl were down to nine men.

Fluminense 1 - Atletico Nacional 0 (Agg. 3-1) (Copa Libertadores, May 6, 2008) Flu eased past the Colombians thanks to a second-half header from defender Roger. The Brazilian side had previously never reached the quarter-finals before.
Estudiantes 2 - LDU Quito 1 (Agg. 2-3) (Copa Libertadores, May 6, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) Luis Bolanos gave the side from Ecuador the lead and the Argentineans had a mountain to climb, they did pull goals back through Alayes and Maggiolo but it was in vain. Their furstration boiled over towards the end of the match and Enzo Perez was sent-off for pinching the nose of LDU forward Joffre Guerron (0.40 into this video).
Atlas 2 - Lanus 2 (Agg. 3-2) (Copa Libertadores, May 6, 2008) A poor night for Argentinean teams was capped by Lanus’ exit from the competition. Atlas twice took the lead with goals from Marioni and Mendivil whilst Sand and Acosta scored for Lanus.

Newcastle 0 - Chelsea 2 (Premier League, May 5, 2008) Michael Owen spurned a great opportunity to put the Toon in front in the sixth minute after a great ball from Butt. Just before the half-hour the Toon should have taken the lead, but Terry saved off the line from Owen after Cech had saved from Viduka. Minutes later Michael Ballack should have done better when put through on goal. Anelka was next to shank a shot wide, and Terry picked up a yellow card when Owen bounced off the centre-half. (First half highlights here.) After the break Chelsea came out with far more purpose, John Terry seeing his header crash off the bar from Malouda’s corner. And Chelsea didn’t have to wait too long before finally going ahead, Drogba crossing to Ballack who headed home unchallenged from close range. Owen fluffed a great chance to draw the Toon level at the back post, Martins dragged his shot wide, while Ballack looked for the second from distance. Chelsea killed the game in the 82nd minute, sub-Lampard threaded a pass to Malouda who beat Harper with a left-foot strike. The Blues play Bolton on the final day of the season, Manchester United travel to Wigan.

Crystal Palace 5 - Burnley 0 (Championship, May 4, 2008) The Clarets were in trouble after Clarke Carlisle was sent off for a professional foul. Ben Watson scored from the penalty and just two minutes later Victor Moses made it 2-0 for the hosts. Palace led 3-0 at the break thanks to a Tom Soares strike, and goals from Scott Sinclair and Clinton Morrison completed the rout in the second half. Palace meet Bristol City in the playoffs.
Ipswich 1 - Hull 0 (Championship, May 4, 2008) Ipswich had a goal controversially disallowed after three minutes and spurned a string of excellent chances. Substitute Alan Lee grabbed the winner after an assist from Jonathan Walters.
Leeds 2 - Gillingham 1 (League One, May 3, 2008) Paul Huntington’s shocking backpass allowed Jackson to coolly finishing from six yards out. Leeds levelled on 69 minutes when Johnson volleyed home Seb Carole’s cross. Tresor Kandol turned the game on its head with the winner on 88 minutes. Leeds face Carlisle in the playoffs, while Gillingham were relegated.

Brondby 3 - Nordsjaelland 0 (SAS Ligaen, May 4, 2008) Stefan Gislason scored a spectacular goal to break the deadlock, karate-kicking a volley from 25 yards which sailed across the keeper into the top corner. Further goals from Holmen and Ericsson sealed the victory.

Duisburg 3 - Bayer Leverkusen 2 (Bundesliga, May 4, 2008) Duisburg twice took the lead through Manasseh Ishiaku and twice surrendered it, courtesy of goals from Lukas Sinkiewicz and Tranquillo Barnetta, before a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Blagoy Georgiev fired Duisburg off the bottom of the table.
Kickers Offenbach 1 - Monchengladbach 7 (Bundesliga II, May 4, 2008) Oliver Neuville netted a brace of penalties, Ndjeng also bagged two goals, with Marin, Touma and Coulibaly scoring the others for Monchengladbach.

Ajax 3 - Heerenveen 1 (Agg. 5-2) (Eredivisie Champions League playoff, May 5, 2008) Michael Bradley saw red early on for Heerenveen, and Ajax took advantage to lead at the break through Kenneth Perez’s penalty. Dennis Rommedahl doubled the hosts’ advantage three minutes after the interval and Perez bagged his second seven minutes later to put the tie beyond doubt. Danijel Pranjic got a consolation for the visitors, but its Ajax who will meet FC Twente to decide who will play Champions League football next season.
VVV Venlo 1 - Ado Den Haag 0 (Eredivisie Promotion/Relegation playoff, May 4, 2008)

Arsenal 4 - Leeds 1 (Women’s FA Cup final, May 5, 2008) Three goals in six minutes - Kelly Smith’s hooked effort, Jayne Ludlow’s neat finish and a deflected Lianne Sanderson - secured the victory for Arsenal. Jessica Clarke headed Leeds back into the game but Smith tapped a late fourth to secure a record ninth Cup triumph.
