Romania vs Kosovo match preview
At the half-way mark of Group I, Romania currently occupy that all-important second spot, but will they still be there come close of play on 21 November?
On Saturday night, the two leading contenders to take the runners-up place went head-to-head at Arena Națională, with Israel visiting București.
The home side looked set to claim a priceless victory, Denis Alibec pouncing on a goalkeeping error to fire home, only for Israel to equalise shortly after the interval, as the points were shared.
Edward Iordănescu’s team do remain unbeaten in this campaign, although three successive draws leaves them second, just one point clear of Israel.
The Tricolorii take on the group’s three outsiders next, before concluding their campaign in November against Israel in Jerusalem and then Switzerland in Bucharest on the final matchday.
Before those decisive games to come, it’s vitally important Romania do not drop points in matches such as this.
Kosovo meantime aren’t going to be featuring at next summer’s European Championships, although they have proved to be difficult to beat so far.
At the weekend, they came from behind twice to hold Switzerland to a 2-2 draw in Pristina, with Vedat Muriqi on target twice, the latter a dramatic 94th minute equaliser.
The Dardanians have now drawn four of their five fixtures in this group, their sole defeat, bizarrely, coming against strugglers Belarus in June.
Saturday’s draw was Primož Gliha’s first match in charge, now dreaming of delivering Kosovo’s first qualification win in 11 attempts, their most-recent such victory coming in Georgia two years ago.
The reverse fixture at Fadil Vokrri Stadium did end goalless, but anything less than three points for Romania at Arena Națională would almost certainly see them end the night outside of the qualification positition.
