Romania vs Israel match preview

With Switzerland highly-likely to top Group I, and the three minnows all ill-equipped to challenge, these two will be fighting it out for second spot, making this clash in București so crucial.

After four matchdays, it’s currently advantage Romania, given that they occupy that all-important runners-up place, albeit they’re only a point clear of their visitors.

Last time out, Edward Iordănescu’s side pulled off a miraculous draw in Switzerland, smuggling a point despite being 2-0 down in the 89th minute.

Valentin Mihăilă was the hero, first halving the deficit at Swissporarena, before bagging a dramatic, last-gasp equaliser, right at the death to stun Luzern into silence.

This maintains Romania’s unbeaten start to Euro 2024 qualifying, with the Tricolours fully aware that a victory here would be a gigantic step towards next summer’s tournament.

Israel though know a victory on the road in this one would see them leapfrog their hosts at the half-way mark.

Alon Hazan’s team got their campaign properly up-and-running in June, recording back-to-back victories, beating Belarus 2-1 in Budapest, before a victory by the same scoreline over Andorra in Jerusalem.

The Blues and Whites’ sole major tournament appearance came at Mexico 1970, representing Asia, still yet to make it to one since gaining UEFA membership in 1991.

This group gives Israel a very decent chance of changing that, although defeat in this one would be a serious dent to their top two aspirations.

Will there be a winner on, what’s set to be, a very nervy night at Arena Națională?

Romania team news

Having scored twice in Switzerland last time out, Valentin Mihăilă should expect a heroes welcomes ahead of this one.

Ianis Hagi is fit again, which is a big boost, while George Pușcaș is likely to lead the line.

Israel team news

Celtic’s Liel Abada and Manor Solomon of Spurs will flank Shon Weissman in attack, forming a front three that can threaten any defence.
