Romania vs Ukraine match preview

Will Ukraine make it two wins out of two at this summer’s under-21 European Championships?

On Wednesday evening, Ruslan Rotan’s team made the perfect start to this campaign, beating Croatia 2-0 at Stadionul Rapid-Giulești.

Oleksiy Kashchuk broke the deadlock after little over a quarter of an hour, jinking through the Croatian defence before slotting the ball in off the post.

Then, just two minutes after the interval, Kashchuk turned provider, with his dinked cross nodded home by Danylo Sikan.

2-0 it finished in the Romanian capital, as Ukraine claim their first win at this tournament for 17 years.

Another victory for the Blue and Yellows here would see them reach the knockout stages.

Just 3.8 miles across Bucharest, co-host Romania suffered a serious reality check in their group opener.

Emil Săndoi’s side held out for almost an hour, but were eventually demolished 3-0 by pre-tournament favourites Spain, much to the disappointment of the over 21,000 supporters in attendance.

Romania upset the odds by getting all the way to the quarter-finals of this competition just four years ago, but now must win to avoid being eliminated with one group game still to play.

Can the co-hosts claim a crucial victory at Stadionul Steaua, or will Ukraine continue to impressive?

Romania team news

Emil Săndoi did make all five changes allowed during the Spain defeat, but will he tinker with his starting XI?

Valentin Mihăilă is likely to come into the XI; he didn’t feature on Wednesday, having scored twice for the senior team against Switzerland in a Euro 2024 qualifier 48 hours earlier, snatching a point in that one.

At left-back Valentin Țicu is hoping to be recalled.

Ukraine team news

Similarly, Mykhailo Mudryk was an unused substitute on Wednesday, having been in action for the senior side earlier in the week.

Anatoliy Trubin did start in goal though, 48 hours after doing so for the seniors in a win over Malta.

Winger Oleksiy Kashchuk was the star of matchday one, scoring a wonderful solo goal before providing the assist for Danylo Sikan.
