Malta vs England match preview

Will England’s perfect start to Euro 2024 qualification continue?

Back in March, Gareth Southgate’s team faced Group C’s other two high-quality sides, but claimed maximum points from both matches.

First, the Three Lions defeated Italy in Naples, with Declan Rice breaking the deadlock before Harry Kane converted a penalty, the goal that made him England’s all-time leading scorer.

Three days later, Kane was on target again with Bukayo Saka also scoring a screamer in a 2-0 victory over Ukraine at Wembley.

So, even though there’s still six qualifiers to go, England can be pretty certain of a place in Germany next summer.

The Three Lions have won all five previous meetings with Malta, including 2-0 and 4-0 victories during World Cup 2018 qualification.

An even more emphatic away victory is expected in Ta’ Qali this time.

As for the home side, unsurprisingly, they lost both qualifiers in March, albeit only narrowly, going down 2-1 in North Macedonia before a 2-0 reverse when Italy paid a visit.

The Falcons have now lost 18 of their last 21 qualifiers, their sole win in this period coming against Cyprus.

So, England are expected to run riot a Grawnd Nazzjonali.

Malta team news

Star midfielder Teddy Teuma, who plays for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, will miss this game due to a hamstring injury.

Striker Jodi Jones will be up against the country of his birth, with his most-recent club appearance coming for Notts County in the National League play-off final win at Wembley.

Seven members of this squad, including goalkeeper Henry Bonello and captain Steve Borg, play for Maltese Premier League champions Ħamrun Spartans.

England team news

England will make the three hour flight south without Nick Pope, Lewis Dunk, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling and Tammy Abraham due to injury or poor form.

Jordan Pickford has been the undisputed number one since Gareth Southgate took over, but Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale will be hopeful of earning his fourth cap, either here or at Old Trafford on Monday.

Five Man City treble winners are in the squad, but it remains to be seen if any of them will play, having spent the last week partying, with specific reference to Jack Grealish.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is back in the fold, following a strong end to the season with Liverpool, while Eberechi Eze has been called up for the first time, determined to play for England despite interest from Nigeria.

Harry Kane scored twice when the Three Lions last visited Malta in 2017, so will be confident of adding to his 55 international goals here.
