France vs Greece match preview

Will France’s flawless and imperious form in Euro 2024 qualifying continue?

On Friday night, les Blues swatted aside Gibraltar 3-0 at Estádio Algarve, with Olivier Giroud bagging an early opening, Kylian Mbappé converting a penalty and an own goal completing the rout.

That made it three wins out of three for Didier Deschamps’ team, who demolished Netherlands 4-0 in March before a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Dublin three days later.

So, even with half the campaign to go after this win, another win would, to all intents and purposes, see France qualify for next summer’s Euros.

Next June will mark a decade since Greece’s most-recent major tournament appearance, but Gus Poyet’s team are looking in decent shape to end this exile.

Three nights ago, the Sky Blue and Whites managed to beat Republic of Ireland 2-1 at Agia Sophia Stadium.

Anastasios Bakasetas converting an early penalty before Georgios Masouras curled home a second half winner.

This means Greece have maximum points on the board, having, just as their hosts did, also swatted aside Gibraltar 3-0 in Southern Portugal.

If Greece are going to qualify automatically, they’ll be looking to usurp Netherlands, making their head-to-head meetings in Eindhoven on 7 September and in Athens on 16 October potentially massive.

Even if Poyet’s team do not finish in the top two of this group, they are guaranteed a play-off place next March, making building momentum important.

Here though, an emphatic home win is very likely at Stade de France.

France team news

Didier Deschamps rotated for Friday’s match with Gibraltar, giving senior international debuts to Brice Samba in goal as well as a centre-back Wesley Fofana.

This time, Mike Maignan is likely to be donning the gloves, with Dayot Upamecano set to return to defence.

One man who’s never rested is Antoine Griezmann.

He hasn’t missed a France game for six years, featuring in all 79 competitive internationals since his debut in 2014.

11 of Kylian Mbappé's 39 international goals have been scored in Paris, and he’ll fancy he chances of increasing both figures at Stade de France.

Greece team news

Vangelis Pavlidis got the nod up front in the win over Ireland, chosen over in-form Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Right-back George Baldock will win his ninth cap, with Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas and Konstantinos Mavropanos, once of Arsenal, also featuring in defence.

Goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has kept 15 clean sheets in 32 international appearances, and he’d be delighted if he could further improve that ratio here.
