Bulgaria vs Serbia match preview

Will Serbia’s perfect start to European Championship qualifying continue?

Back in March, Dragan Stojković's side began this campaign with back-to-back 2-0 wins, beating Lithuania in Belgrade and then fierce rivals Montenegro in Podgorica.

Then, on Friday night, the Eagles were in friendly action in Vienna, beating Jordan 3-2, with Strahinja Eraković on target before Dejan Joveljić bagged a late brace to snatch the win.

As attention tuns back to qualifying, Serbia were always likely to comfortably qualify through Group G, and a win in Razgrad would ensure they remain clear of the rest, very much on course to make their Euros debut.

Bulgaria have featured at nine major tournaments in their storied history, but next summer marks two decades since their last appearance at one.

This exile is set to continue, with the Lions rock bottom of this group, with just a point to their name.

Mladen Krstajić's team were beaten 1-0 by Montenegro at home in March, before being steamrollered 3-0 by Hungary in Budapest three days later.

Then, on Saturday, despite being up against ten-men for over 73 minutes, they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Lithuania; Marin Petkov equalising from the edge of the box at Darius and Girėnas Stadium.

So, Bulgaria have now won just five of their last 35 competitive fixtures, only claiming wins over Czechia, Lithuania, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar and North Macedonia in the last five years.

So, despite being on the road, Serbia are favourites to win at Huvepharma Arena.

Bulgaria team news

Martin Minchev was chosen to lead the line in Kaunas on Saturday, despite still seeking his first international goal.

Wingers Kiril Despodov and Spas Delev as well as midfielder Ivaylo Chochev are the only members of this squad with over 20 caps to their name.

Serbia team news

Dragan Stojković heavily rotated for Friday’s friendly win over Jordan, but all the available big guns will be back here.

Vanja Milinković-Savić will return in goal, with his brother Sergej back in midfield.

Centre-forward though is a bit of a concern though, given that Dušan Vlahović, Luka Jović and Aleksandar Mitrović are all injured.

Dejan Joveljić's brace off the bench against Jordan could see him get the nod, with Đorđe Jovanović the alternative.

Captain Dušan Tadić will win his 98th cap, chasing down Branislav Ivanović's record of 105.
