Ajax vs Olympique de Marseille match preview

The headline fixture of the Europa League group stage’s opening round is set to play out at The Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, September 21st.

The matchup in question will see Ajax act as hosts, in a meeting with Olympique de Marseille.

Beginning with the former, Ajax have endured an altogether underwhelming start to the new campaign.

After stuttering to a 3rd-placed Eredivisie finish last time out, the capital giants have since continued to disappoint over the early weeks of the new term, en route to just one league win from four.

Most recently, this past weekend, Maurice Steijn’s troops were condemned to a deserved 3-1 defeat at FC Twente, leaving them 12th in the Dutch top-flight.

Though Ajax did manage to battle past Ludogorets to book their place in the Europa League group stage late last month, it is therefore safe to say that the one-time heavyweights of the continental game do not look quite as daunting an opponent at present as they did in years gone by.

Hopeful of taking advantage of such woes later this evening, in turn, will be the aforementioned Marseille.

OM, for their part, have not exactly set the world alight either over the early weeks of the domestic season in France.

Owing to the inconsistency of those around them, though, Marcelino’s men nevertheless sit 3rd in the Ligue 1 table, unbeaten in five.

Last time out, despite racking up 24 shots at goal over the course of the 90 minutes, Marseille were forced to settle for a disappointing point in a home meeting with Toulouse.

Their spot in the 2nd tier of European football, meanwhile, comes owing to a shock two-legged Champions League qualifying defeat at the hands of Panathinaikos, who made clear the fact that the French giants’ level appears to have dipped when compared to last season.
