This tie is wide open, providing both clubs with a golden chance to progress.

AZ are the on the cusp of reaching a continental semi-final for the first time in 18 years, having subsequently fallen at this hurdle in 2007, 2012 and 2014.

Pascal Jansen’s side sprung a real surprise in the last 16 by dumping out Lazio, winning both legs 2-1, despite going a goal down in both.

The same can be said about Anderlecht who are ninth in the Jupiler Pro League, which would represent their lowest finish since 1937.

Thus, it was a major surprise last month when Brian Riemer’s team took out one of the favourites Villarreal, courtesy of a famous 1-0 win at Estadio de la Cerámica, with Islam Slimani the match-winner.

In Alkmaar, AZ have won all seven matches in Europe this season, scoring 23 goals, and are unbeaten in 24 home matches in UEFA competition, dating back to February 2017.

With that in mind, this first leg at hahah feels must win for Anderlecht.

Having only been on the bench for Sunday’s goalless draw with Westerlo, Islam Slimani will return to lead the line here.

Another familiar face Jan Vertonghen will start at centre-back, and will remain key to Anderlecht’s hopes.

AZ team news

AZ are short of defensive options right now with Bruno Martins Indi, Maxim Dekker, Zinho Vanheusden and Sam Beukema all injured.

Likewise, their star number ten Dani de Wit is also out long-term, a serious blow, and Đorđe Mihailović will be tasked with filling his rather large void.

Centre-forward Vangelis Pavlidis was rested at the weekend but will return here, seeking to add to his 19 goals this season, seven of which have come in this competition.
