Copa América 2024: Argentina v Canada – Preview, predictions, picks, offers and odds

Argentina take on Canada in the Copa America semi-finals on Tuesday night

Match Preview

Argentina will look to repeat their group-stage win over Canada when the sides clash again in the Copa America semi-finals tomorrow night.

Goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez saw the defending champions to a 2-0 win in the tournament’s opening game on June 21 as Lionel Scaloni’s side got off to a strong start. They have looked largely dominant ever since by following up that result with wins over Chile and Peru. They were made to work harder in the quarter-finals but goalkeeper Emi Martinez came to the fore once again to see them through a penalty shootout against Ecuador.

Lionel Messi returned from a thigh injury for the Ecuador game and, while not at his best, the Inter Miami star’s presence always brings an extra dimension to their play. Messi will start again at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as Argentina go in search of a third major tournament win on the trot after winning the last Copa and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Tournament debutants Canada have been the surprise package under new coach Jesse Marsch. Marsch has only been in charge for two months but already has Canada playing his customary high-tempo style.

They also required a shoot-out to make it to the last four, goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau the hero in the win over Venezuela.

Marsch is delighted with the way his players have been able to adapt to his methods so quickly. He said: “I’ve tried to build in the right kind of aggression for them to go after opponents, to go after big games and to believe in how we’re building this.

“Their commitment to try to learn, their belief in what I’m doing with them is very, very high. They’re capable because they’re athletic, because they’re strong, because they’re young.

“We’ve seen an incredibly fast learning curve, but it’s because they’re excited about playing this way, and they’re excited about what we’re trying to achieve together.”
