Russia vs Egypt match preview
Russia host Egypt on Tuesday at the Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg.
Russia begin the game as leaders of Group A, above Uruguay on goal difference.
Stanislav Cherchesov’s side thrashed Saudi Arabia in last week’s opening match of the tournament. Yury Gazinskiy, Denis Cheryshev (2), Artem Dzuyba and Aleksandr Golovin all scored in the 5-0 win.
A victory for Russia would see become the first side to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.
Egypt suffered a late 1-0 defeat in their opening match against Uruguay. Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez scored an 89th-minute winner to break Egyptian hearts.
Should Egypt lose on Tuesday, their fate will rest on the outcome of the other Group A match between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia later in the day.
If the Pharoahs lose to Russia they would require Saudi Arabia to beat Uruguay in order to stay in the competition.
Russia and Egypt have never faced each other before.
Russia team news vs Egypt
Key man Alan Dzagoev was forced off early on in the opening match and has not even travelled for the Egypt game.
Denis Cheryshev, who replaced Dzagoev, is likely to start on Tuesday following his two goals on Thursday.
Artem Dzyuba’s goal off the bench also puts him in contention to start, placing Fyodor Smolov’s spot at risk.
Egypt team news vs Russia
Egypt played the entirety of their opener without star player Mohamed Salah.
The Liverpool winger was deemed unfit following his shoulder injury sustained in the Champions League final.
Salah is fully expected to start on Tuesday, which will give Hector Cuper’s side a massive morale boost.
Tarek Hamed could miss out through injury which would likely see Sam Morsy start the match.
