France vs Peru match preview

Group C action continues on Thursday night with France taking on Peru at the Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg.

France begin the day as Group C leaders, above Denmark on goals for. Les Bleus were made to work hard for their three points in their opening match, which they won 2-1 against Australia in Kazan.

Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Australia captain Mile Jedinak levelled things up, also from the spot.

The match looked to be heading for a draw before Aziz Behich poked the ball over Matt Ryan and into his own net. The goal was originally credited to Paul Pogba before a closer inspection by FIFA.

Those who did not start in Kazan played in a friendly match against Spartak Moscow’s Under-19 side the following day.

Should Denmark avoid defeat in their game against Australia earlier in the day, then a win for France would confirm their place in the knock-out stage of the competition.

Can Peru stay alive at the World Cup?

Peru will need to avoid defeat in order to keep their hopes alive.

Ricardo Gareca’s side were beaten 1-0 by Denmark in their Group C opener in Saransk, with Yussuf Poulsen netting the only goal of the game. Christian Cueva skied his penalty kick, a miss that ultimately cost his side a point.

The two sides have only faced each other once in their history, back in 1982. France won the international friendly 1-0.

France team news vs Peru

Didier Deschamps could make a number of changes on Thursday night.

Djibril Sidibe missed the Australia match through injury and is hoping to come back into contention for Thursday. The Monaco right-back is set to replace Benjamin Pavard in the eleven.

Benjamin Mendy could come in for Theo Hernandez at left-back, while Blaise Matuidi is expected to get the nod ahead of Corentin Tolisso in midfield.

Olivier Giroud could start up front, with Ousmane Dembele making way.

Peru team news vs France

Captain and top scorer Paolo Guerrero was bizarrely left out of the starting eleven against Denmark and is expected to start on Thursday.

Edison Flores is likely to be the man sacrificed for Guerrero, which would see Jefferson Farfan pushed out into his favoured wide position.
