France vs Argentina betting tips: World Cup match preview & predictions

France vs Argentina prediction: France 1-2 Argentina

Although France were among the pre-tournament favourites, this has been a World Cup of upsets and I fancy Argentina to continue that trend.

They’ll need their main man Leo Messi to be at his best if they are to pull off a shock victory.

France vs Argentina: Who will win?

Unsurprisingly, France are 11/8 favourites to win the match in normal time, and 4/6 to qualify.

Argentina are 13/5 to win the match and 11/10 to progress to the quarter-finals.

Although the French are favourites, Lionel Messi is 4/1 favourite to score the opening goal of the game.

France vs Argentina match preview

France take on Argentina at the Kazan Arena on Saturday in the first knockout match of the 2018 World Cup.

France progressed to the last 16 as winners of Group C, finishing on 7 points from their three matches. Didier Deschamps’ side were far from convincing in their final group match which ended in a 0-0 draw against Denmark.

Despite a lacklustre performance, the goalless draw was enough to see Les Bleus claim top spot in their group, which saw Peru and Australia eliminated from the competition.

Argentina narrowly scraped their way into the last 16, finishing second in Group D, just one point above Nigeria but five behind leaders Croatia.

Argentina looked to be heading out of the competition with their final Group match against Nigeria locked at 1-1 before a very late Marcos Rojo winners sent Jorge Sampaoli’s side through. Lionel Messi had given Argentina an early lead with his first goal of the tournament.

Off the pitch, Argentina legend and FIFA ambassador Diego Maradona stole some of the headlines for his disorderly behaviour in the stands.

France and Argentina have faced each other 12 times in their history, with the French winning just two of those meetings.

Argentina have won both previous World Cup meetings against France, in 1930 and 1978.

The winners of the match will meet one of Uruguay and Portugal in the quarter-finals on 6 July.

France team news vs Argentina

Having been rested for their final group game, Hugo Lloris, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba are all set to return to the starting eleven.

Samuel Umtiti is set to win his fitness race and start alongside Raphael Varane in defence. Lucas Hernandez is expected to start ahead of Benjamin Mendy at left-back.

Paul Pogba, Blaise Matuidi and Corentin Tolisso are all one booking away from suspension.

Argentina team news vs France

If Argentina are to win, they’ll need to turn things around quickly, both on and off the pitch. Their disjointed preparations prior to the tournament look to be taking their toll on the team.

Following Willy Caballero’s clanger against Croatia, 31-year-old goalkeeper Franco Armani was handed an international debut against Nigeria. Armani is expected to keep his place on Saturday.

Enzo Perez is a slight doubt for Argentina but is expected to recover in time.

Quite incredibly, Paulo Dybala was not substituted on by Sampaoli, despite Argentina desperately needing a goal. The Juventus star man has played just 22 minutes all competition.

Angel Di Maria was among the long list of players to have had a stinker on Tuesday night although his place does not seem to be at risk.

Sergio Aguero will be hoping to force his way back into the side but faces stiff competition from Gonzalo Higuain.

Ever Banega, Gabriel Mercado, Javier Mascherano, Lionel Messi, Marcos Acuna and Nicolas Otamendi are all one booking away from a ban.
