Egypt vs Uruguay betting tips: World Cup match preview & predictions

Egypt vs Uruguay prediction: Egypt 0-1 Uruguay

Uruguay head into the match as overwhelming favourites. Having only played one warm-up match, however, the Sky Blues will likely still be a bit rusty.

Egypt have scored just two goals in their five matches in 2018, failing to win all of them.

Egypt vs Uruguay: Who will win?

Uruguay are strong favourites to win on Friday with odds of 8/13.

Those fancying Egypt’s chances will like the look of their 13/2 odds.

Barcelona’s Luis Suarez is 3/1 to be the first goalscorer in Friday’s match.

The Premier League’s top scorer Mohamed Salah is 50/1 to be the competition’s top goalscorer, although the Liverpool attacker remains a doubt for the opening match.

Egypt vs Uruguay match preview

Egypt take on Uruguay in match two of the 2018 World Cup. The two sides are in Group A, alongside hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia.

The 2018 World Cup marks Egypt’s third appearance at the finals, with their last coming in 1990. Two-time winners Uruguay will be competing in their 14th finals.

Egypt qualified for the World Cup after finishing top of their qualifying group, which featured Uganda, Ghana and Congo. Unsurprisingly, Mohamed Salah ended the African qualifying campaign as the joint-leading goalscorer with five goals.

Uruguay qualified for the World Cup after finishing 2nd in the CONMEBOL table, ahead of Argentina, Colombia and Peru. Edinson Cavani was the continent’s top scorer in qualifying with 10 goals.

The oddly-shaped Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg (below) will host Friday’s match. The 35,000-seater Stadium has a bizarre external stand.

Egypt & Uruguay will be ready to go

Uruguay’s only warm-up match saw them beat Uzbekistan 3-0 last Friday. Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Luis Suarez and Jose Gimenez scored the goals for Oscar Tabarez’s side. Tabarez, 71, is the longest-serving head coach at the World Cup, having been in the job since March 2006.

Egypt’s last victory came in October 2017. Hector Cuper’s side have failed to win any of their six matches since then. Last Wednesday the North Africans were beaten 3-0 by Belgium. Prior to that Egypt drew 0-0 and 1-1 with Colombia and Kuwait respectively.

Egypt and Uruguay have only faced each other once, back in 2006. The international friendly was won 2-0 by the South Americans.

Egypt team news vs Uruguay

Egypt are sweating on the fitness of star man Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool winger sustained a serious shoulder injury in last month’s Champions League final defeat and is a doubt for Friday.

In the pre-match press conferences and build up to the match, it looks very likely that Salah will start the game.

New Huddersfield Town winger Ramadan Sobhi would be the obvious replacement should Salah be unavailable.

Goalkeeper Essam El Hadary is the oldest player in the competition at 45 years of age.

Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny will start in central midfield, while West Brom duo Ali Gabr and Ahmed Hegazi are expected to start in the heart of defence.

Uruguay team news vs Egypt

Arsenal target Lucas Torreira is likely to start the match on the subs bench. Juventus midfielder Rodriguo Bentancur – Uruguay’s youngest squad member – could start instead.

Former Barcelona defender Martin Caceres is expected to start at left-back, with Gaston Silva an alternative option.
