Colombia vs England betting tips: World Cup match preview & predictions

Colombia vs England prediction: Colombia 1-2 England

The winners of Group H Colombia take on the runners-up of Group G England for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The South Americans were forced to recover from an opening round defeat to Japan. Colombia went on to claim top spot in their group following two successive wins over Poland and Senegal.

Gareth Southgate will be hoping that his gamble to field a weakened eleven in their 1-0 defeat to Belgium will not come back to haunt him on Tuesday, as they finished runners-up in Group G.

Colombia vs England match preview

Following a shock defeat during the opening matchweek of the tournament, Los Cafeteros recovered just in time to reach the knockout stages.

Two impressive wins over Poland and then Senegal have seen them hit form just at the right time and with star man James Rodriguez now expected to return, Colombia will always be growing in confidence.

Along with Rodriguez, the performances of Juan Quintero have caught the eye. Whilst the young, defensive partnership of Yerry Mina and Davinson Sanchez has proved to be one of the nation’s biggest assets.

Can the Three Lions reach the World Cup quarter-finals?

Defeat in Kaliningrad to an Adnan Januzaj wonder strike ensured that Gareth Southgate’s side finished as runners-up in their group.

Southgate rested a number of the Three Lions’ key players against Belgium, a luxury Jose Pekerman could not afford, meaning the likes of Harry Kane and Jesse Lingard are well-rested.

On paper, Southgate’s gamble looks a sensible one with England now facing an easier route to the semi-finals than they would have done finishing topping Group G.

Tuesday’s winner in Moscow will face either Sweden or Switzerland in the next round of the competition with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Is the World Cup coming home?

There is little doubt that England as a country has been swept up in World Cup emotion, during the past couple of weeks.

The late win over Tunisia and shellacking of Panama set the pulses racing and brought back faith in Gareth Southgate’s England side.

So much so, that some England fans have been plotting what looks to be the easier route to the final, once the defeat to Belgium’s reserve side was confirmed.

Colombia will be no push overs, with or without James Rodriguez, who looks likely to dominate the team news, as he looks to recover from injury.

England can be positive with serious firepower and talent in their ranks. But, they are also short of experience, especially in a mega game like this one.

If the round of 16 is anything to go by so far, this will be edge of the seat stuff and could well be another classic encounter.

James Rodriguez suffered a worrying injury during his side’s win over Senegal, however, despite concerns, the 26-year-old looks set to return.

Abel Aguilar is also a doubt for the game currently carrying an injury.

England team news vs Colombia

Dele Alli has recovered from an injury which saw him miss England’s previous two games and is fit to face Colombia.

The likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jesse Lingard and Jordan Henderson are all expected to return with Southgate set to revert back to the side that defeated Tunisia.
