USA v Mexico Match Preview
For the sixth time this century and the second time in the last three Gold Cups, USA and Mexico will come to blows in the final.
The Americans secured their place with a 2-1 win over Guatemala on Thursday, with Mexico beating Honduras 1-0.
A win in Houston would secure Mauricio Pochettino’s first international trophy, offering long-awaited vindication for the Argentine manager after facing heavy criticism ahead of the Gold Cup — especially following a four-game losing streak before the tournament began.
The United States, meanwhile, have a strong track record in Gold Cup finals, lifting the trophy in three of their last four appearances, including two shutouts.
Sunday’s clash will mark their fourth major CONCACAF final of the decade, and they’ve come out on top in each of the previous three — notably capturing the 2021 Gold Cup title among them.
Momentum is also on their side: the USMNT have won their last nine matches in all competitions when leading or tied at halftime, a trend they’ve continued four times during this year’s Gold Cup run.

In a tense and physical semifinal clash against a highly aggressive Honduras side, Mexico held their ground and advanced, relying on a disciplined and resolute defensive display.
Javier Aguirre has now etched his name into Mexican football history once again, becoming just the second manager to guide El Tri to multiple Gold Cup finals. He previously led the team to the title in 2009, joining Gerardo Martino as the only other Mexican coach to reach two finals in this tournament.
Under Aguirre’s leadership, Mexico have been a defensive fortress throughout this Gold Cup, registering four consecutive clean sheets and conceding some of the lowest expected goals (xG) figures in the competition. In Wednesday’s semifinal alone, they held Honduras to an xG of just 0.10 — one of the lowest marks by any team so far.
With five straight shutouts in Gold Cup knockout matches — a streak that matches their run from 1993 to 1998 — El Tri now have their sights set on making history. A win on Sunday would deliver a record 10th Gold Cup title.
