Inter Miami v Montreal: Line-ups, stats and preview

Montreal have taken five points from nine away games in this season's MLS

Inter Miami v Montreal match preview

Inter Miami will be desperate to avoid going a fifth match without victory when they host Montreal in the first of two MLS games in three days on Wednesday.

Failing to win against the team bottom of the Eastern Conference would accelerate talk of a crisis at the club who finished with a record points total last season but have one win in eight, conceding at least three times in six of their last seven games.

“Despite their position in the standings, you saw that in several of Montreal’s games they deserved better results than what they got,” said Miami manager Mascherano, analysing opponents with one win from their first 15 league games.

“I don’t think they are opponents we should judge by their record. They [matched] and gave trouble to Columbus, Philadelphia and LAFC.

“They are very physical, like most teams in the MLS. They have good players in the final third and we expect it to be tough.”

Inter Miami Football Club manager Javier Mascherano

Montreal made significant changes to their coaching staff at the start of May after failing to win any of their first 11 MLS games in 2024/25.

Manager Marco Donadel’s assistant, Ludovic Taillandier, left the club and was replaced by coaches Maxime Leconte and Lorenzo Pinzauti.

“We’re in a difficult period, but our young players are going through it,” club president Gabriel Gervais said this week (via Montreal Gazette), emphasizing a focus on developing prospects.

“If you always develop by winning, do you know how to get through the tougher times?

“We’d like to be in a better situation, but every defeat is an opportunity to learn. When the collective is successful, it’s easier for the personal project.”

Miami v Montreal team news

Midfielder Yannick Bright is Miami’s newest injury absentee after sustaining a hamstring injury in their thrilling 3-3 comeback draw at Philadelphia on May 24, when Lionel Messi scored a sublime long-range effort that was awarded MLS Goal of the Round.

“Yannick is a very important player for this team, as he was last year,” rued Mascherano. “We lose his physicality, which clearly the team needs

“Especially on the defensive side, he gives us a lot and, sadly, he’s had this injury. We hope it is minor so he can return as soon as possible.”

Midfielders David Ruiz and Baltasar Rodriguez also missed out through injuries, while goalkeeper Oscar Ustari is continuing to deputize for Drake Callender, who had a hernia operation earlier this month.

Mascherano added veteran goalkeeper William Yarbrough to his squad last week and says he has informed Miami’s board of more reinforcements he wants.

Centre-back George Campbell (thigh) and midfielders Bryce Duke and Hennadiy Synchuk (lower body) are out for Montreal.

Forward Fabian Herbers has an ankle injury and midfielder Dominik Yankov has a groin problem, but defender Joel Waterman is available again after suspension.

Towering former Germany youth international Prince Owusu scored his fourth MLS goal of the season in a 2-2 draw on May 25 at home to LAFC, whose recovery from two goals behind included a 77th-minute Olivier Giroud equaliser.

Miami v Montreal prediction

With two games in quick succession before a break from league action for next month’s Club World Cup, Miami are under pressure to improve their seventh-placed standing in the table in what feels like a must-win game early in the season.

Telasco Segovia’s 95th-minute equaliser gave them much-needed relief against leaders Philadelphia and Mascherano undoubtedly hopes that his defence will improve their confidence by keeping a rare clean sheet.

Montreal’s tally of 10 goals makes them the lowest scorers in the Eastern Conference by three goals, so expect Miami – with Messi in form – to win 3-0.

They have a tougher-looking assignment next, hosting fifth-placed Columbus on Saturday (19:30).

Miami launch the 2026 Fifa Club World Cup at the Hard Rock Stadium against Egyptian side Al-Ahly on June 14 (20:00).
