Match preview for USA v Trinidad & Tobago
Group D action kicks off at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday, with the United States hosting Trinidad and Tobago at PayPal Park in San Jose, California.
The US men’s national team enter the tournament on the back of a 4-0 loss in a friendly against Switzerland. Trinidad and Tobago, meanwhile, suffered a 2-1 defeat to Costa Rica in a World Cup 2026 qualifying match earlier this week.
It’s been a rough year for the US. Their grip on the CONCACAF Nations League was broken earlier this year, and they head into the Gold Cup on a four-game losing streak.
Despite that dip in form, the US are still strong favourites to top Group D. They haven’t lost a group-stage game at the Gold Cup since 2013, a run that stretches 19 matches.
They’ve also handled Caribbean opponents well in recent years, winning their last three competitive meetings, each against Jamaica, by an 8-3 combined scoreline.
History also favours the Americans in this matchup. Trinidad and Tobago have failed to score in any of their last 15 visits to the US for competitive fixtures, with the Americans winning each time.
On the other side, Trinidad and Tobago are making their fourth consecutive Gold Cup appearance and are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2015.
