Lionel Messi contract, salary

Messi remains the most high-profile footballer in the world alongside Ronaldo and has an optional extra year in his Miami contract.

Speaking to Marca after Messi’s arrival was first announced, Miami managing owner Jorge Mas said the four-time Champions League winner would earn up to $60 million a year.

Messi’s purported playing salary of up to $20.4m is considerably more than any other player in the US and is heftily increased by holding equity in the club and payments from league broadcasters Apple.

Miami captain and reigning MLS Most Valuable Player Messi signed a deal until December 2025 when he joined the franchise as a free agent in July 2023, and The Athletic has described renewal talks as “advanced”, citing sources in the US.

Messi said he felt “very happy” at Miami in February, while owner Jorge Mas predicted in early April that the 37-year-old’s future would be resolved “within 60-90 days”.

“It’s solely his decision,” Mas told FDP Radio Miami, adding that “the stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel”.

“My hope has always been — and everything we’re doing — is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens.”
