Patrick Mahomes ‘hurt’ by Luka Doncic’s departure from his beloved Dallas Mavericks

Mahomes will be one of the key protagonists in this weekend's Super Bowl

Dallas Mavericks fan Patrick Mahomes admitted he was “hurt” by the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in return for Anthony Davis.

The world of sports was stunned Sunday when the news broke that the Slovenian superstar was heading to LA in return for All-NBA big man Davis.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Texas native Mahomes, who is preparing for Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, is a courtside regular at Mavs games, and was surprised as everyone else that a deal of that magnitude got done.

He said: “Luka is such a franchise player. I know it hurt my heart as a Mavs fan, but I’m excited for the future and having [Anthony] Davis.

“It definitely hurts more than anything knowing Luka and the work that he put in and the time he’s put in in Dallas and the city and how he’s done so much for it. That’s been the thing that’s hurt me the most.

“But I’m excited for the future of the Mavs as well. Having AD and Kyrie Irving and all these guys they have, they’ll have a chance to go out there and compete. But I’m excited for Luka too and to get to learn under LeBron [James] and become an even better basketball player.”

There is no question of Mahomes turning his back on the Mavs despite the loss of their star man.

He added: “I know the Mavs have a great basketball team and getting Anthony Davis is going to help them.

“I’ll be there. I’m a Mavs fan through thick and thin.”
