The Utah Jazz and head coach Will Hardy have agreed to a multi-year contract extension that will keep him in Salt Lake City through the end of the 2030-31 season, Jazz majority owner Ryan Smith announced earlier today.

“We are excited to extend Will Hardy’s contract as head coach of the Jazz through 2031,” Smith wrote in a social media post. “Will is a great leader, communicator, and ambassador for our org, and is a tremendous partner to Danny [Ainge], JZ (Justin Zanik), and me. Our goal is to hang a banner, and Will is a huge part of this journey.”

Hardy was a former small forward for Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduating, he eventually became a basketball coach in San Antonio, where he served as an assistant for the Spurs from 2015 to 2021 before moving to Boston. He then worked as an assistant under former Celtics head coach Ime Udoka for one season before joining the Jazz.

“I’m humbled and honored,” Hardy told ESPN’s Holly Rowe.  “This is an incredible franchise. To be able to be committed to the next phase of our process is hard to explain. Moments like this are very surreal. I’m so excited.”

Will Hardy was named the head coach of the Utah Jazz on June 28th, 2022. In his first three seasons with the Jazz, he has amassed a record of 85-161. Unfortunately, Utah had the worst record in the NBA this season at 17-65.

”Will is an incredible teacher, communicator, and partner, ” said Jazz general manager Justin Zanik. “He’s invested in individual development and development for us as a team. I’m not sure there’s anyone better in the league in investing in our group. He got players to believe in their own development and take charge of it.”

“Will’s leadership has been invaluable to our program,” added Danny Ainge, the Jazz’s CEO of basketball. ”He has established a vision for our players and a strong foundation of core values, competitive habits, and growth mindset. He is one of the brightest young coaches in our league, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him.”

Because they had the worst record in the league, the Utah Jazz have a 14% chance of earning the number-one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They’ll find out what their pick ends up being when the NBA Draft Lottery is held on May 12th, 2025.
