LeBron James says he needs “a glass of wine and some sleep” after breaking NBA record

James needed a lie down after playing a key role as the Lakers beat the Warriors

LeBron James joked he needed “a glass of wine and some sleep” after becoming the oldest man in NBA history to score more than 40 points in a game.

James poured in 42 on 14-for-25 shooting as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors 120-112 for their 10th win in 12 games.

Afterwards, the 40-year-old said he needed to relax in a way suitable for someone of his age.

“What do I think? That I’m old,” he said with a smile.

“That’s what I think. I need a glass of wine and some sleep, that’s the first thing I think about.”

James’ efforts saw him join Michael Jordan as the only two men post-40 to score over 40 points in a game.

He added: ”The biggest thing is we got the win, obviously. But throughout my journey, anytime I’ve been named or in the category or whatever the case, crossed paths with any of the greats, it’s always humbling. Just to know where I come from. And I love the game so much. So it’s pretty cool.”

Redick hails brilliant James

James turned in a masterful display with a party-piece three-pointer from center court the highlight.

“I think with LeBron, we’ve run out of words and superlatives and descriptions to sort of capture what he’s doing at this stage of his career and at this age,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “It continues to be remarkable, it really does. And he really led us tonight.”

Doncic still to come

The Lakers fans were treated to an exhibition but they have more enjoyment to come with Luka Doncic waiting in the wings.

The Slovenian superstar was watching from the bench and could make his Lakers debut on Monday against the Utah Jazz if he can prove his fitness.

“I’ve been watching him since he got into this league,” James said of Doncic. “And what he’s capable of doing is special. He’s a super-duper special talent.”
