MLB: Brewers’ Rookie Pitcher Misiorowski Leaves Debut With Cramps After Five No-Hit Innings

He's the tenth player in the last 134 years to pitch five innings while allowing no hits in his major league debut.

23-year-old Milwaukee Brewers rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski threw for five innings in his MLB debut without allowing a hit before leaving the game with leg cramps in the team’s 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. With that performance, he became just the tenth player since 1891 to pitch at least five no-hit innings in his major league debut.

“[It] feels great,” Misiorowski said after the game. “A lot of fun, like everything I ever expected.”

After recording zero strikeouts in the first inning, Misiorowski explained that he had to calm himself down a little bit before going out for the second inning.

“I felt amped up and had to relax myself,” he said. “That second inning was like, ‘Okay, calm down. You got this. You’ll be fine.'”

According to ESPN, 14 of the 81 pitches he threw reached a speed of at least 100 miles per hour. Since 2008, only four other pitchers have thrown more 100+-mph pitches in their major league debut, according to MLB.com.

“That’s how I throw. Every pitch is trying to throw 100%,” Misiorowski said. “It is what it is. That’s how I throw… I think that’s pretty normal for me.”

Interestingly enough, he said his debut exceeded the expectations he had set for himself.

“I’ve been planning this thing out in my head forever,” Misiorowski said. “I don’t think it was anywhere near what I thought. I thought I was going to give up a few hits. Get your welcome-to-the-show kind of experience. But just kinda rolled with it and now we’re here.”

“He was impressive every way you look at it,” said Brewers manager Pat Murphy following the win. “I think he was super nervous before the game, and that’s to be expected, but I think he handled it really, really well.”

Murphy also gave some credit to catcher William Contreras, who is in his third season with the club.

“William did a great job with him,” he said. “It just goes without saying. You gotta remember the catcher brought him along a little bit. I thought he did a really nice job.”

Unfortunately, Jacob Misiorowski’s debut was cut short by cramping in his right calf and quadriceps. It also doesn’t help that he appeared to slightly roll his ankle while walking back to the mound after a pitch.

“[I] cramped up, and that’s when I just rolled it, so… all good,” Misiorowski said. “Nothing crazy. Just [a] cramp.”

Understandably, he was frustrated that his electric debut had to end on such a sour note.

“Of course, I didn’t want to leave like that,” Misiorowski explained. “I feel like I could have kept going, but you know, cramped up and stuff happens.”

He reassured fans and members of the media that his leg currently feels fine.

“I saw the picture,” Misiorowski said. “It looks bad, but… it feels good.”

The Brewers continue their series against the Cardinals today in Milwaukee. The first pitch in that game is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. EDT.
