NFL: Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Explains Why C.J. Stroud Isn’t Throwing At OTAs

The 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year is dealing with shoulder soreness.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud runs out of the tunnel before a game with his helmet off.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has been skipping portions of throwing drills during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) due to what coach DeMeco Ryans describes as “general soreness.”

“There’s no concerns with C.J. It’s just general soreness,” Ryans said. “We’re taking extra precaution with him, but he’ll be good to go. No concerns on my end there.”

Stroud’s pain was initially described as a pectoral issue before being redefined as “general soreness.” After being pressed for more answers, Ryans shut down the questions regarding Stroud’s health.

“That’s it for C.J., guys. On the questions, that’s it,” Ryans said. “What I said, that’s it for him. It’s general soreness, and we’re taking extra precaution with him. We’re not gonna rush him into anything. He’ll be fine. When the moment is for him to be ready to go, he’ll be ready to go.”

C.J. Stroud does not have a history of recurring shoulder injuries. His only shoulder problem occurred in Week Two of the 2023 season when he wound up on the injury report. Despite the issue, Stroud threw for 384 passing yards and two touchdowns in a 31-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

C.J. Stroud will be entering his third year in the NFL this season. Through his first two seasons, he has thrown for 7,835 passing yards and 43 touchdowns. He has also led the Texans to two playoff wins in his first two years as a pro.
