Giants supercharge their defense, pick Abdul Carter third overall

The New York Giants don’t have a long-term answer at quarterback, but what they now have is a very frightening defensive front.

New York went down the widely anticipated route with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday, using that selection on Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter.

With Cam Ward going to the Tennessee Titans and potential two-way star Travis Hunter landing with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the best pure defensive player in the draft fell into the lap of the Giants.

They will now get to line him up on what figures to be an extremely formidable defensive front alongside three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns, the latter has registered at least 7.5 sacks in each of his six seasons in the NFL.

Carter delivered monster production in his final season with Penn State, racking up 12 sacks and a remarkable 24 tackles for loss, that latter tally leading the entire FBS.

Playing with Lawrence, Burns and Thibodeaux, he could get the benefit of a lot of one-on-one matchups to help him hit the ground running in the pros.

A native of Philadelphia, Carter won’t have to move far as he starts his NFL career playing in New Jersey.

With the talent he’ll have around him up front, he should feel right at home in a hurry.
