Cowboys working on ‘two pretty substantive trades’ ahead of NFL Draft

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a big claim ahead of the draft.

The 2025 NFL Draft is under 48 hours away, and Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones did his bit to ensure his team will be a talking point as he teased that they are “working on two pretty substantive trades”.

Jones did not reveal anything further about the potential trades, though his comments add intrigue ahead of a draft in which the Cowboys are under significant pressure to address some glaring issues on their roster, most notably at the wide receiver position.

Speaking at his pre-draft press conference, Jones said: “We’re looking at two things that could happen before or after the draft. Two pretty substantive trades. Been working on today [Tuesday].”

Many may take Jones’ words with a pinch of salt. He famously said last offseason that the Cowboys were “all-in” in a bid to end their long wait for a sixth Super Bowl title.

However, the Cowboys made no moves to reflect that apparent stance, and subsequently slumped to a 7-10 record. Dallas has not reached the NFC Championship Game since their last Super Bowl-winning season of 1995.

Their free agent moves this offseason were underwhelming, with the only multi-year contract handed to an outside free agent going to defensive tackle Solomon Thomas.

Dallas instead focused on taking care of its own, with the re-signing of Osa Odighizuwa to a four-year, $80 million deal the Cowboys’ most important move of the offseason so far.

Now attention turns to what they will do with the 12th overall pick in the draft. Help for CeeDee Lamb at wideout and a boost for the running game are seen as priorities for Dallas.

But if Jones’ words do prove prescient and the Cowboys can pull off a couple of big-time trades on top of some smart additions in the draft, then Dallas may soon be taken more seriously as a threat in the NFC.
