Aaron Rodgers to miss final New York Jets warm-up, Saleh confirms

Rodgers has not played a full game for 20 months due to an Achilles injury

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers will not play in the New York Jets’ final pre-season game against the New York Giants on Saturday.

Rodgers has not appeared in either of the Jets’ previous two warm-up games – continuing coach Robert Saleh’s policy of not using starters in pre-season – meaning his first competitive action following his lengthy injury lay-off will come in the Week 1 clash against the San Francisco 49ers on September 9.

The Monday Night Football clash with the Niners will come almost exactly a year since Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on his Jets debut against the Buffalo Bills.

The franchise have held joint practices with the Giants, the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons in recent weeks – with Rodgers featuring heavily – meaning Saleh is confident the 40-year-old won’t be undercooked when the season gets underway.

Last year, Rodgers played two series in the Jets’ final pre-season game.

Saleh told reporters: “[There were] different reasons last year as compared to this year.

“I’m not going to get into those, but I feel like we’ve gotten so much work done, so much good work, with three quality opponents over the course of three weeks.”

On Tuesday, Rodgers said he felt good physically despite not playing a full game for 20 months when he was still a Green Bay Packer.

The quarterback said: “I feel good about where I’m at with my body and what I’ve kind of put together.

“I feel like I’ve done different things throughout camp as far rollouts and pulling up, getting out of the pocket and making plays, throwing back across my body, pump-faking, actually extending plays and getting some yards. So I feel like I’ve done a lot.”

Jets back-up quarterback Tyrod Taylor won’t face the Giants either. Instead, Adrian Martinez will play the first half and Andrew Peasley the second.
