“Xavi is NOT, nor has it ever been, an option to coach Barça” damning assessment of the former club captain as Koeman’s future remains uncertain

Koeman’s future uncertain

After the defeat to Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou, Barcelona were left with one game left to play and their season already over.

It has been a very difficult campaign for the Blaugrana and coach Ronald Koeman which has led to suggestions as to whether he’s the right coach to take the club forward.

Koeman said ahead of the defeat that he could not explain what happened in a recent meeting with president Joan Laporta but that further meetings were scheduled. The loss to the norther Spanish club could have made the situation worse.

“I cannot explain much of what happened in the meeting with Laporta,” he said.

“I can’t explain much. We spoke about Barcelona, the team, the latest results… We have arranged to talk when the season ends.”

Laporta was appointed earlier this year and may want to make a change so that the club is taken forwards by someone of his choosing.

ESPN report that candidates are being assessed but also that the Dutch coach could remain if the options do not prove fruitful.

Sources at the club told ESPN he could still fulfil his deal if none of the alternatives convince.

The same sources told ESPN that Barca are keen to avoid a repeat of what happened after Ernesto Valverde was sacked in 2020 without a substitute lined up.

Xavi not ever a candidate

There has always been a underlying thought process that Xavi Hernandez was seen as the heir to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.

A player schooled under Guardiola with Johan Cruyff’s philosophy ingrained into him.

He has been cutting his teeth in coaching in Qatar with Al Sadd. He recently claimed the Qatari Super League title with the help of former Spanish teammate Santi Cazorla the star of his team.

He has won the Qatar Cup twice in 2020 and 2021, in addition to a number of other honours. He is doing everything he can effectively at the level he is at. However, information is surfacing that should Barca look at candidates, Xavi is and has never been an option at this stage.

“Xavi is NOT, nor has it ever been, an option to coach Barça,” said Sique RodríguezGairí a Barcelona-based journalist.

“If you have to clean up, you’re not the ideal person and Laporta doesn’t quite convince you”

It seems this is not necessarily down to Xavi’s credentials and potential but more down to the fact Barca need to be rebuilt. They need a coach that will craft the squad and build it back up.

When Barcelona has again a solid foundation, Xavi could then come in to flourish.
