Why Raheem Sterling is missing for Man City vs Brighton

Sterling absent from Man City squad

Manchester City traveled south for a key clash against high-flying Brighton tonight, as Pep Guardiola looks to get one over on Graham Potter as the top-four pair face off at the American Express Community Stadium.

The Sky Blues, though, will be made to do so without Raheem sterling.

City have been stripped of the services of England international Sterling, who has not only missed out on selection in the match day XI, but is absent from the squad entirely.

No, this is not due to do the growing tension between Sterling and Guardiola, but it has been reported that the England man was not fit enough to be included in the traveling squad.

It cannot be said that City will miss the former Liverpool academy graduate too much, however, as Sterling has managed to crack the starting XI this season on just three occasions out of eight opportunities, while also only starting in the Champions League in one of the Citizens’ three European ties.

Cover for bigger issues at the Etihad?

Naturally, there are some that could well assume that Sterling being dropped from the team altogether after starting against Burnley last weekend comes as more than simply a result of a supposed fitness concern.

Sterling has already spoken openly about his desire to leave City after the season, and has been linked with interest from a host of European clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.

Despite his issues at club level, Sterling remains important for England under boss Gareth Southgate, and could certainly expect every opportunity to push forward in his career if and when he eventually leaves the Etihad.
