Why Joe Willock’s loan from Arsenal to Newcastle makes perfect sense for the player and the club

Willock’s Arsenal difficulty

Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock is edging towards his first loan move from the club after Newcastle United have reportedly reached an agreement to take the England youth international on loan.

Willock has started just two Premier League games for Arsenal this season and with the arrival of Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid, it is unlikely that the 21-year old would get regular minutes at Arsenal.

He is highly thought of by Mikel Arteta who has used him many times as an impact substitute. He also started him against Wolves and Leeds United in the hope he could fill the creative void in the number 10 position.

“I really like their approach they’re (youngsters) having, to make the difference, not just to play and be there,” he said. “They want to make a difference for the team. They’re playing with a lot of personality.”

“Keep doing what he’s (Willock) doing consistently and his chance will arrive.”

However, with the rise of Emile Smith-Rowe and Odegaard’s signing, his place in the pecking order has fallen significantly.

Arsenal’s loss is Newcastle’s gain

Newcastle United recorded a desperately needed win against Everton at the weekend after scoring twice through Callum Wilson. Steve Bruce has been under intensifying pressure over recent weeks to turn the form of the Magpies around.

The possible signing of Joe Willock would provide Bruce with further energy. Willock’s training under Mikel Arteta will bleed into the high-pressing style that Steve Bruce spoke about after the victory over Everton.

“It’s something that we came up with, to try something different tactically,” said Bruce. “We thought we could get a bit down that side. It was very pleasing.”

“It’s something we’ve been working on now for weeks. We’ve been working on trying to get on the front foot. I think the players have enjoyed it, certainly by looking at their performance today they’ve enjoyed the change. You need a result to go with it, so today everyone’s happy.”

Adding to the high energy attacking midfielders of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin with Callum Wilson in fine goalscoring form, the deal could be a perfect match for both player and club.
