West Ham’s Champions League bonuses revealed

The surprise package

West Ham have shown to be the Premier League surprise package of the season as they currently sit fourth in the table and just a single point behind third place Leicester City after they beat the Foxes 3-2 at the weekend.

“It sounds great that people are even considering us that we could be Champions League contenders and I think that in itself is making the league exciting. It is a great time for West Ham supporters as we want to try and do it,” said Moyes after the win.

“We want to try and be in European football of some sort and I think if we do that it would be a great achievement.”

The Hammers have games against Chelsea and Everton to come which will likely decide their European fate.

With many player contracts there are often clauses inserted into these to provide additional motivation and reward should club targets be met.

One such clause would be for qualifying for the Champions League and West Ham are very close to achieving this goal with only a number of games remaining. Many players could receive an unexpected boost to their finances should the achieve their goal.

It has been revealed by The Times that on average each player would effectively earn an extra £350,000 amounting to a figure in the region of £8.5 million in total which West Ham would have to pay to their players.

It is unsurprising to see figures such as this inserted when the idea of West Ham qualifying for such a competition seemed so unlikely at the start of the campaign.

However, even with this significant outlay, the money which the club would then make from competing in next year’s competition would far outweigh the bonuses paid out.

The Hammers could arguably also attract better players which could progress them even further as a club.

The pressure will be on Moyes to now finish the season strongly and in the top 4.
