‘We need more players’ – Luke Shaw publicly calls on Manchester United to bring in reinforcements

The worst start

Manchester United’s 3-1 home loss to Crystal Palace was a significant sign that the Old Trafford club are ill-prepared for the season.

United’s involvement in last month’s delayed final stages of the Europa League afforded them a late start to the new Premier League campaign. However, it was abundantly clear that their additional week of rest did not provide enough time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to prepare to face a strong Palace team.

The Red Devils’ defeat was made worse by former United player Wilfried Zaha scoring twice, the first of which came following a controversial penalty call. However, it was clear from their performance, penalty call aside, that the Manchester giants deserved little from the game.

“We didn’t deserve to get anything from the game,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained to Sky Sports.

He continued: “We started badly and slowly; we looked like a team early on in their preparation in pre-season.”

Help needed

After Saturday’s clash, Luke Shaw made a public appeal to the Manchester United hierarchy to bring in reinforcements.

Speaking with Norway’s TV2 Shaw said, “We are a very good group, but personally I think we need more players to strengthen the squad.”

“It can give us a boost. When you look around at how other teams are strengthening their teams, then we must also do it to keep up with the others.”

United’s summer transfer window has seen just Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek arrive. The Dutchman scored what proved little more than a consolation goal on his first appearance for the club.

The Reds’ long-term interest in Jadon Sancho has rumbled on throughout the window. However, there has not yet been a breakthrough in a potential deal.

Shaw himself could even find minutes hard to come by if Porto’s Alex Telles makes the move to the north west:

Whilst signings would certainly help, it should be noted that Crystal Palace’s starting XI yesterday featured no new signings. Every one of Roy Hodgson’s starters were Palace players last season. Summer signing Eberechi Eze came off the bench, along with Michy Batshuayi.

With just weeks of the window remaining, Manchester United now need to move fast if Shaw’s wishes are to be fulfilled.
