Varane to miss Real Madrid’s game with Liverpool after testing positive for Covid-19, El Clasico in doubt

Varane to miss Real Madrid’s game with Liverpool after testing positive for Covid-19, El Clasico in doubt

Varane tests positive

Real Madrid have been hit with a major problem ahead of their Champions League clash with Liverpool after French international defender Raphael Varane tested positive for Covid-19. He will therefore be unavailable for the clash with the Merseyside club.

The positive test comes in the week not only leading up to the Champions League game but also ahead of the pivotal El Classico match in La Liga against Barcelona at the weekend. The winner of the match would take a significant stride forwards in the title race.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are already light in the area after Sergio Ramos was confirmed to be missing the game through injury.

It is most likely that Nacho Fernandez will be joined by Eder Militao in the Los Blancos defence, a significant drop from the usual Ramos and Varane partnership. The irony being Liverpool too are without their three first team defenders, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Madrid worried about further cases

The problem, which now is a concern, is whether or not further players will test positive due to the close proximity of Varane to his teammates.

According to Spanish outlets AS, players are being tested daily now and with El Classico at the weekend, should further positive results present, it could endanger their competitiveness in upcoming fixtures.

So far Real Madrid have seen Eden Hazard, Nacho Fernandez, Casemiro, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao and Mariano Diaz all test positive for Covid-19 this season.
