Thomas Tuchel explains lack of game-time for Hakim Ziyech at Chelsea

boss Thomas Tuchel has given fresh insight into Blues attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech today, fielding his own theory as to why the Moroccan has failed to replicate his pre-season form in the current 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

According to Football.London, Tuchel believes that the former Ajax Amsterdam stalwart may still be suffering the after effects of his injury, physical or otherwise, after pre-season form tipped Ziyech to star for Chelsea this season;

“He fought his way into the team, he was in the team in the beginning of the season because of performance, because it was so obvious after the pre-season that he has to be on the pitch.

To start from there he was on the pitch, he scored and then had the injury in the Super Cup game and from there I felt that it cost him a lot because maybe even until today I don’t feel him 100 per cent free with his shoulders.

Surely when we played him and made him play over 90 minutes, we started him several times after that, started him in Premier League and Champions League, I felt that even if it is maybe no pain, even if it is maybe unconscious, subconscious, there is something that limits him in his movements and in his freedom to move to turn and to accelerate and decelerate and I think he needs time and patience to fight his way back into the team.”

Moroccan has failed to replicate Ajax form

When Chelsea purchased Hakim Ziyech from Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam for €34million in the summer of 2020-21 as part of a massive recruitment drive that saw the club also bring in Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva, and Malang Sarr, many looked at Ziyech as a potential dark horse to really help Chelsea push on.

While Chelsea have indeed kicked on under Tuchel in the wake of the club parting ways with former midfielder Frank Lampard, Ziyech has failed to bring to bear his creative qualities and additional goal threat regularly seen at Ajax.

The Moroccan has managed just 7-goals and 4-assists in 45-appearances across all competitions for the Blues since his arrival, a far cry from the 49-goals and 81-assists produced at the Amsterdam Arena.

With Chelsea now flying under Tuchel and topping the Premier League with deep pockets in the attacking positions, the only chance Ziyech has to push for a long-term spell at Stamford Bridge is to replicate the form seen in pre-season.
