Lloris calls for patience with Espírito Santo amidst poor run of form

Long-time Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris has leapt to the defense of new manager Nuno Espírito Santo in the wake of Spurs’ 3-1 loss to Arsenal in the North London Derby at the weekend.

The loss, Tottenham’s third on the bounce, has produced the clubs worst run of form since the September 2003 and has seen the north London side surrender nine goals, with the lone goal coming in consolation after being 3-0 down by halftime at the Emirates.

But Lloris has called for patience in the early doors of the Espírito Santo era, which is officially less than two months old;

“For any manager, it’s not easy to change everything in one or two months — it’s impossible. But he’s bringing his ideas and, step by step, he’s building his relationship with the players.

Clearly, we are starting [something new]. The idea is that it’s a new process, a new era, with young players. It can’t happen in just two or three months. We need time. We need confidence, we need to stick together — managers, the coaching staff, medical staff, players — and try to go in the same way.

This is the important thing, to try to make sure everyone is going in the same way. I think we will have a better view [of where we are] in a few months.”

The immediate aftermath of Tottenham falling to bitter rivals Arsenal at the Emirates stadium – and the manner in which the loss transpired – was too much for the Tottenham Supporters Trust to take.

TST contacted the club and asked for a meeting in order for “the club to explain its strategy.”

Spurs started the season brightly in the league, winning their first three fixtures on the spin – including a highly credible three point haul against champions Manchester City – but have immediately been brought back down to earth in the Premier League and currently sit 11th in the table while boasting a -5 goal difference after three heavy defeats in a row.

Things have not gone swimmingly on the continent either, with Tottenham playing out a 2-2 draw at Roazhon Park against Stade Rennais.

Such a request draws plenty of similarities with AST’s reactions to the early doors of the Mikel Arteta regime in conjunction with KSE ownership of the club. Arsenal have finished outside of the European places in back-t0-back seasons under the Spaniard, and though they have righted the ship after a dismal start to the current campaign, similar criticisms have been laid at the feet of both managers by the custodial groups.
