Torreira’s father convinced son will leave Arsenal, Boca transfer fee discussed

Torreira’s father convinced son will leave Arsenal, Boca transfer fee discussed

Torreira wants out of Arsenal

Torreira joined Arsenal in 2018 as one of the first signings under the new Unai Emery regime. He looked to be a solid addition to the club putting on some strong defensive performances but began to falter when the Spanish coach decided to use the Uruguayan in a more advanced role.

When Emery was ultimately sacked, Mikel Arteta came in and favoured a combination of Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos in midfield. Torreira left on loan to Atletico Madrid on Deadline Day but after the passing of his mother recently has admitted he wants to leave Europe entirely.

“I want to be close to my home, my family. I have a contract at Arsenal and I am on loan at Atletico but I want to go to Boca. I hope the clubs can agree,” he said.

“It’s been two years since I was enjoying myself personally, I haven’t had continuity. Arsenal hurt me and at Atletico, I don’t play like I want.

“Nobody from Boca called, they sent me a shirt. And the day Boca played Santos, I sent a message to encourage them.

“I just want to play for Boca. I have made my decision. I will do it for my father. He asked me and I’m going to do it.”

Arsenal and Arteta have been yet to comment on the possibility of Torreira leaving.

Torreira’s father speaks about exit

Torreira referenced his father in the reasoning behind playing in South America. He, Ricardo Torreira, has now spoken out about the proposed departure from Europe of his son.

“Lucas does not know Argentina but he is a Boca fan as a boy. Obviously it is the first option for him, but I have already received other calls from Brazilian teams in case Boca does not happen,” he said.

“Lucas is suffering a lot to be alone there in Europe, we are seeing how we can accompany him this month and a half until the end of the season. When you lose a person as happened to us, so dear, you realize that life passes you by the other side. If Lucas wants to come to Boca, let him come.”

“We raised the situation and it seems crazy, that playing in Europe and being able to win millions of dollars, if he happens to return to South America to play soccer. We are not crazy about ambition.”

Ricardo also opened up about the situation regarding a transfer fee wanted by Arsenal.

“We want to resolve Arsenal’s departure first and then sit down with Boca. If they believe it is convenient that Lucas is the player, they will exhaust the resources to reach an agreement. It is obvious that Boca will have to spend, Arsenal will want to something in return. But it is not that Lucas is going to lose value by coming to Boca,” he said.

Arsenal will hope to collect as much of the £26 million fee they paid to Sampdoria for his signature. Boca Juniors historically have no gone close to a figure of that amount in the past and a deal could be tricky to configure.

The possibility of Arsenal looking for a player-plus-cash deal for Torreira though could help in finding an agreement.
