Steve Bruce will “never be satisfied” with his Newcastle squad

Bruce left unsatisfied after disappointing summer

Hardly anyone could argue with Newcastle boss Steve Bruce reading the riot act over the Magpies’ lack of summer spending in the run-up to the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

According to the Independent, Bruce has continued to speak out at the lack of backing from club owner Mike Ashley and has openly stated he “will never be satisfied” with the state of the squad.

Newcastle’s lone deal of the summer came by way of a £25million outlay for Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock after the England youth international greatly impressed on-loan during the second half of last season. But after the club opted to pay the deal in installments, the summer window remains as quiet as a mouse, with Newcastle only looking into a handful of loan moves that never materialized before the window slammed shut.

Tasked with once again trying to keep the club above water in the Premier League, Bruce spoke on his remit as a manager to try to always improve his options;

“…all parties have long been aware of the budgetary parameters under which we are operating. Look, my job is to always try to improve the squad and never be satisfied, never.

I thought a couple of additions to the squad on loan would help us enormously. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to do that. To enable us to do it, it wasn’t just the money side of securing a loan.

To bring in two in particular, we would have to make room and we were unable to trade as well. I was hoping that we could trade a couple to bring in a couple, and unfortunately that didn’t work and didn’t happen, so frustrating, but that’s the stance and I knew what the stance of the club was.

The statement has made it pretty obvious what it is, so I have to accept it and move on.”

Newcastle youngsters to cover thin squad at the weekend

The state of the Newcastle squad is frustrating enough, but the current selection issues taking hold at St. James’ Park will likely see young pair Joe White and Elliot Anderson come into the matchday squad for the Magpies trip to Old Trafford amidst the anticipation of Cristiano Ronaldo’s second club debut.

The absences of Calum Wilson and Ryan Frasier, in particular, are set to force Bruce to turn to the White and Anderson, who are not unfamiliar with the Newcastle first-team after both have already made their debuts previously; White during pre-season, while Anderson made multiple appearances last term.
