Steve Bruce provides update on Callum Wilson’s fitness before Leeds

Callum Wilson is still a doubt for next weekend

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce gave an update on a number of his walking wounded in the wake of the Magpies’ 4-1 Old Trafford drubbing at the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United, including news on key striker Callum Wilson.

Wilson was one of six Newcastle players who missed out on featuring in Ronaldo’s second United debut that saw the Portuguese icon bag a brace, and Bruce has not given an all-too positive update on the England man, who is currently “touch and go” for next weekend:

“I cannot put a timescale on it. It will be touch and go whether he is ready for next week.”

Wilson has been instrumental as ever for Newcastle early on in the campaign, bagging two goals in the opening three fixtures of the season after netting against both West Ham on matchday one, and Southampton on matchday three. Despite his goals, Bruce’s men have earned just a single point early doors, and after today’s heavy defeat, boast the worst defensive record in the Premier League.

Injury bug at Newcastle highlights lack of summer investment

With six first-team players on the injury table at current, Newcastle is already in the thick of the relegation dog fight after just four weeks of Premier League action, and has been made to contend without key players.

Apart from the aforementioned Wilson, Ryan Fraser, Martin Dúbravka, and Jonjo Shelvey have all been hit with injury issues, among other squad-mates that have seen time on the treatment table.

As options are already beginning to thin out, the question around Newcastle this season will undoubtedly once again fall on the fact that the club failed to improve squad depth in the summer apart from a successful deal for Arsenal’s Joe Willock, with Bruce recently reflecting on that very issue in admitting that he will “never be satisfied” with the state of his options at St. James’ Park.
