RB Salzburg take on Sevilla
Austria take on Spain in the opening tie of the Champions League, as Sevilla host RB Salzburg in Group G. Sevilla were knocked out in the quarter-final stages last time out, losing out to Borussia Dortmund, who were subsequently knocked out by Manchester City.
By contrast, RB Salzburg were knocked out in the group stages last season. Both sides will be desperate to improve on their campaigns last season, with a group including Lille and Wolfsburg perhaps offering a better opportunity to do so.
Liverpool target takes centre stage
Somewhat amazingly, a new Champions League record was set in the first half of their clash, as a mammoth 4 (four!) penalties were conceded across the opening 45 minutes.

Even more surprisingly, two were missed by the away side, meaning that the sides went in level at 1-1 despite the seeming gulf in quality.
The main difference, however, lay in one man. RB Salzburg forward, and rumoured Liverpool target Karim Adeyemi. The German international, who opened his account for his country in the most recent international break, was responsible for winning all three of his side’s penalties.
This in itself is a new Champions League record, with no player having won more than 2 penalties before in the same game, let alone half, of the competition.
3 – Karim Adeyemi is the first player to have won three penalties in a first half of a #UCL match (since det. data collection 2003/04). The record for a full Champions League season since at least 2003/04 is four (Arjen Robben in 2013/14). Unstoppable. #SFCSAL pic.twitter.com/JbN7E8VlNG

In turn, Liverpool fans will be praying that the rumours of their interest turn into concrete action come January.
