Calls Mount for Newcastle boss Howe to pull trigger on major line-up change after Brentford

Calls Mount for Newcastle boss Howe to pull trigger on major line-up change after Brentford

Howe to usher in goalkeeper change?

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was unable to make his full managerial debut for the Magpies at St.

James’ Park when Brentford rocked up on Tyneside today, after testing positive for Covid-19, but the new headmaster surely witnessed the debacle that was Karl Darlow in goal from the comfort of his own home in isolation.

At the time of writing, Newcastle just wrapped up their clash with Thomas Frank’s Brentford outfit in a 3-3 blockbuster that had it all, including a serious blunder from Darlow that gifted the visitors an early equalizer through Ivan Toney after the Magpies went 1-0 up on ten-minutes thanks to Jamaal Lascelles.

The immediate response on social media was undoubtedly telling in the wake of Howe opting to select Darlow ahead of a now fit and available Martin Dúbravka.

Newcastle linked with goalkeeping reinforcements

Thankfully for Newcastle’s supporters, the need to choose between Karl Darlow and Martin Dúbravka may not last much longer after the club was recently linked with transfer interest in Lazio shot-stopper Thomas Strakosha.

The Albanian international has been a credible servant in the Italian capital, but the 26-year-old is now firmly behind Spanish veteran Pepe Reina at the Stadio Olimpico, and has been relegated to European duties only this season.

Available on a free transfer in the summer after his contract comes to an end, Newcastle could still make a move to acquire his services in January and today provided a stark reminder that – if the Magpies’ new project is to get off the ground – they need to start from the back first if they are to improve under their new manager.
