PGMOL may stop Mike Dean & Lee Mason working together after Southampton & West Ham controversy
Referring mistakes
Match officials Mike Dean and Lee Mason are under increasing scrutiny after a number of contentious decisions were awarded by both the referees and the VAR officials at Stockley Park in a number of recent fixtures.
The most contentious of all has been the Tomas Soucek red card which saw the Czech Republic international sent off for an apparent elbow on Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.
“We need a response. This to be rescinded.”
A lot has been said about Tomáš Souček’s red card against Fulham.

West Ham manager David Moyes spoke of feeling sorry for the match officials who he believes failed to make the correct decision.
“I’m embarrassed for the people in VAR and the referees who have made that decision,” he said. “The two gentlemen involved, Mike Dean and Lee Mason, are far better referees than that and have been far better referees.
“I’m amazed they hadn’t seen that as anything other than an accident. What can I say? It’s completely accidental, no malice. He tried to keep him away but catches him accidentally.”
ESPN’s Dale Johnson broke down the incident to try to make sense of why the decision was made. He explained that Mason, who was the VAR official, instructed Dean to look at Soucek’s clenched fist.
“Mason told Dean to look at the clenched fist of Soucek. And it’s not the first time. When Emiliano Buendia of Norwich was sent off vs. Burnley in July, Mason was VAR. He told the ref, Kevin Friend, that Buendia clenched his fist before striking Ashley Westwood with his elbow.”

Yet it was clear to the pundits and many viewers at home how accidental the action was. West Ham have lodged an appeal.
PGMOL’s Dean & Mason scrutiny
Following on from this, The Times have reported that the pair of officials, Mike Dean and Lee Mason, may now be tasked with working with other officials rather than each other the in order to appease some of the frustration from clubs towards them.
The pair were involved in the decision to wrongfully send off Jan Bednarek for Southampton in the the 9-0 loss against Manchester United. The Polish defenders actions were appealed and the suspension rescinded by the FA.

A penalty for Southampton was also controversially denied by Mason who was referring the match between the Saints and Aston Villa, with Dean the VAR official.
This then led to Southampton requesting that neither of Dean or Mason take charge of future matches. Whilst this is not something that the league can enact, it could have had an impact on the recent reports regarding PGMOL.
