Police to investigate after Palace fans target Newcastle ownership

Crystal Palace continued their run of draws of late as the Eagles fought to a 1-1 stalemate at Selhurst Park against visiting” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer”>Newcastle

, as the two clubs took a share of the spoils in what was Patrick Vieira’s fourth consecutive solitary point earned in the Premier League.

But the 1-1 affair was marred by events that took place in the stands after Palace fans unveiled a banner that targeted the new Newcastle owners, a Saudi-led consortium group that ended Mike Ashley’s reign.

The image that was unveiled depicted Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters stood in a pool of blood with money bags at his feet, with a man labeled as “P.I.F” wielding a sword whilst a Magpie was standing just in front of him.

In the wake of the events that took place earlier today, police forces are said to be opening investigations into the Holmesdale Fanatics’, according to The Athletic reporter Matt Woosnam, with potential claims of racism set to be taken seriously.

Opposition against the new ownership group at Newcastle has only gotten stronger in the wake of the £300 million takeover, with some suggesting that the purchase – akin to the rapid rise of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain – is yet another example of how football is being ruined.

Financial gains over footballing prosperity?

The hard truth regarding the Premier League is that now, more than ever, football in England is dominated by pound notes rather than goals.

After Newcastle was bought by the Public Investment Fund-led consortium, just six football clubs in the English top flight remain under English ownership.

Local connection identity has been replaced by financial prowess and the ever-constant growth that the most popular league in the world continues to boast, which has attracted outside forces to flood into the English market to scoop up the biggest clubs in the country.

Much like sports franchises in America, money is now the primary driving force behind football ownership. No matter the size of the club – and Arsenal is a prime example of this – English sides wield enormous financial strength and global appeal while maintaining an ability to increase an owners’ net value irrespective of how the club manage to get on in footballing terms.

Though Newcastle have owners that talk about the size of the club and their desire to rebuild a brand that was damaged for years under Mike Ashley, the reality remains that – as long as PIF and company can make money on their investment either directly or indirectly from the club – the need to be a successful outfit on the pitch may well play second fiddle.
