A bright future for both Felix and Atletico
Atletico Madrid have announced the signing of 19-year-old sensation Joao Felix, with his former club Benfica confirming that the player cost €126 million.
Joao Felix took the world by storm last season while at Portuguese giants Benfica.
The attacking midfielder scored a very impressive 20 goals and assisted 11 in the campaign.
During that time, he won the Liga NOS title, and was also part of the Portugal side which triumphed at the Nations League.
Now, he’s set to take on a new challenge, after joining Atletico Madrid for €126 million.
Is Joao Felix worth £126 million?
Felix’s move to the Wanda Metropolitano was confirmed on Wednesday, after Atletico found an agreement with Benfica for his signature.
A statement on the club’s website explained: ‘João Félix is now an Atlético de Madrid player. Our club and Benfica have reached an agreement over the transfer of the young Portuguese footballer.
‘The forward has already passed his medical at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and signed his new contract for the next seven seasons.’
While there is no mention about the fee in Atleti’s statement, Benfica’s press release doesn’t hold back.
The Portuguese giants reveal that Atletico will pay an initial €30 million, with a further €96 million coming in instalments.
That fee makes Felix the fifth most expensive player in football history.
Only Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele cost more.
While questions will be asked regarding whether Felix is worth that stunning fee, should he fulfil his potential, there’s no telling what the 19-year-old could achieve.
