Norwich reject two Barcelona bids for Max Aarons / Relegated players continue to hold value

Norwich reject two Barcelona bids for Max Aarons / Relegated players continue to hold value

Double rejection

Barcelona are on the lookout for a new right-back. The Blaugrana have been unimpressed by Nelson Semedo’s development since arriving from Portugal.

Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin has reportedly been linked but it appears the Catalan club set their sights on Norwich City’s Max Aarons.

Norwich had a dismal return to the Premier League during 2019/20 and were expectantly relegated back to the Championship. However, there were sparks within the Canaries descent.

Aarons featured heavily and impressed. The 20-year-old has also broken into the England under-21 setup. With Barcelona looking to rebuild, President Bartemeu may have hoped the Norfolk club’s relegation would enable a cheaper sale.

This has reportedly not been the case. According to David Ornstein, Norwich have so far rejected two bids, the latter of which rising beyond £20 million after an initial loan deal.

Ajax’s Sergino Dest appears to be Barca’s plan C with their England-based targets looking beyond their reach.

Relegation costs

Clubs which experience the drop from the Premier League could expect to see their prized assets pillaged by their former league competitors.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic looked to be decreasing the market value of players. With how the window is turning out, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Bournemouth have seen three players (Callum Wilson, Aaron Ramsdale & Nathan Ake) leave for Premier League clubs for close to £80 million. Norwich’s Jamal Lewis departed for close to £15 million.

Watford’s Doucoure is arguably the only example of a player to leave for a price below his Premier League worth.

No longer it seems, can teams steal away the relegated clubs’ most valuable assets for considerably below their player value.

Many former Premier League clubs drop considerably once relegated, some even into financial ruin. If prices remain at these high prices, though, financial implications of relegation may significantly lessen.
