Newcastle won’t sack Bruce after Brighton debacle

Newcastle won’t sack Bruce after Brighton debacle

Bruce wants to fight on

Newcastle lost in extremely disappointing fashion against Brighton on Saturday, in what was billed to be a critical six-pointer for the Magpies. Steve Bruce and his side looked completely dejected and out of ideas as Brighton managed to put three goals past the northeast club.

However, despite the defeat, manager Bruce assured that he will look to carry on, in the belief that he is still the right man for the job.

“Well I believe that, I’ve been around the block a long time. That experience, (I’ve been) trying to draw on it over the last few weeks in particular,” said the Newcastle boss.

“So as I’ve said I’m not the type to just walk away from a bad defeat, but you’re going to have to ask others.”

Bruce went on to reveal his belief that his side have been ‘okay’, and that a poor patch of form is to blame for their run of bad results.

“As I’ve always said that’s for other people to answer. The one thing that I won’t ever do is give up on anything because we’ve had a bad defeat,” he said.

“We’ve been okay I believe, we haven’t been sensational for the last few weeks but tonight we have to accept and I have to accept the criticism that’s going to come our way and the fallout from it because we were simply nowhere near good enough on a big occasion.

“In a big game we simply haven’t done enough and of course the buck stops with me, it always does and that I have no problems (with), but of course because of the way we’ve played tonight I fully understand the frustration and the disappointment with everybody and rightly so.”

Newcastle not sacking Bruce yet

Their defeat on Saturday means that Newcastle remain two points above the relegation zone, but with a game in hand over 18th-positioned Fulham. The final 9-10 games of the season will ultimately determine the placing of both sides, but the Magpies look set to stick with Bruce for the duration.

Lee Ryder of the Chronicle tweeted to confirm that their information suggests Newcastle are not ready to part with the club’s boss, writing: ‘Chronicle Live understands #nufc have decided not to part company with Steve Bruce at this stage despite last night’s awful performance. Bruce insisted he would not walk away last night.’

Looming on the distant horizon, though, is a game on the final day of the season between Fulham and Newcastle. It is possible that the survival race could come down to the final day, and that the clash will determine everything for both clubs.
