Newcastle have 55 million euro bid ‘ready’ for Barcelona shot-stopper

Newcastle looking to build starting from the back

The richest club in the world is finally set to put the key in the ignition for their squad rebuild as Newcastle United is said to be ‘ready’ to make a play for Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-André ter Stegen next summer.

Ter Stegen remains first-choice at the Camp Nou and has started every fixture in both La Liga and the Champions League after recovering from knee surgery that kept him out of the first two outings of the season.

But Newcastle is ready to make a play for the €55 million-rated German international according to El Nacional, with the club looking to build their new project through the spine and from the back.

However, the Magpies will be forced to convince the Mönchengladbach-native to leave Catalunya, as the player is said to be quite happy to remain at the club and has no intention of leaving Barça simply for a bigger wage packet.

Should a deal be struck in the end, ter Stegen may not be the only addition making his way to St. James’ Park next summer, with the club also rumored to have an interest in Arsenal’s on-loan French U21 international Matteo Guendouzi.

Magpies nearing a managerial solution

Links with transfer business is not the only news coming out of Tyneside of late, with Newcastle looking primed to finally appoint their first manager under their new consortium ownership led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

The Magpies are in the final stages of appointing former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, who is set to return to management after going on sabbatical in the aftermath of parting ways with the Cherries in 2020.

Newcastle had previously been rejected by former Arsenal and current Villarreal boss Unai Emery, and also saw negotiations with ex-AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca break down in the final stages.

But Howe, who would be given a two-and-a-half-year contract at St. James’ Park, looks set to be the man that the Newcastle hierarchy will place faith in to right the ship and put it on the proper course before pushing forward.
