Newcastle Covid cases ‘well into double figures’ as match with West Brom falls in danger of postponement
Newcastle Covid cases
It is has been reported that Newcastle are likely to face further postponements with their squad having more than 10 players testing positive for Covid-19. The Magpies had their Friday fixture against Aston Villa called off due to the entire squad and staff needing to self-isolate, the first match postponement since the beginning of the outbreak back in March.
The Telegraph confirmed that they received information from sources that some players have even infected family members who fall within the ‘high risk’ category and there is now a concern of serious life-threatening illness presenting.
With the training complex completely closed, players have been unable to train and were a group of players tested negative, the fitness implications of not training for a sufficient period would surely leave the match at a level of competitiveness not deemed ‘fair.’
Newcastle United’s training ground was closed on Monday as they attempt to deal with an outbreak of coronavirus.

Players are fulfilling training from home but with so many ill, only a proportion have been able to complete these regimes.
The busy Christmas schedule is fast approaching and any rearrangement of fixtures would likely take place in the new year.
Italian forfeits
Newcastle do not, at this stage, appear in danger of facing a forfeit from the postponement of their match against Aston Villa. With the possibility of the match against West Brom also being postponed and the busy Christmas schedule approaching, the thought of forfeiting the match has not yet surfaced as a possibility.
Napoli, in Serie A, were forced to give a 3-0 victory to Juventus earlier in the year after a local lockdown of Naples led to the side being unable to travel to Turin.
This was different from the situation which Newcastle currently have with a squad available plenty sufficient to play the fixture. The Court of Arbitration for Sport supported the league’s decision to award Juve the victory.
Stating Napoli, “Deserve the sanction because it was not at all impossible for them to take part in the match, having instead pushed the situation in that direction in a voluntary and pre-ordained manner.”

“Napoli’s behaviour was effectively creating an alibi for themselves not to play. Their conduct in the days leading up to the match was already aimed towards not playing, with clear violation of the fundamental principles that sporting justice is based on, namely fairness, decency and probity.”
It remains to be seen whether the Premier League will introduce similar sanctions but with the situation very different, it is doubtful whether Newcastle would face any forfeit.
