Mikel Arteta on whether Willian’s arrival has affected Arsenal spot-kick pecking order

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was this afternoon drawn on whether or not the summer addition of Willian is set to have an effect on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s status as first-choice penalty taker at the club.

Gunners return to action

Arteta’s men, along with the majority of the Premier League’s clubs, of course got their 2020/21 campaign underway last weekend.

The capital giants made the trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon, for a meeting with Fulham.

And, when all was said and done in southwest London, Arsenal’s class proved far too much for Scott Parker’s men.

Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring inside the matchup’s opening 10 minutes, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added to debutant Gabriel’s header shortly after half-time to send the Gunners back across the capital with a comfortable 3 points.

‘Auba will start’

As such, on the back of his side’s superb start to the campaign, Mikel Arteta will no doubt be keen to keep the momentum going with a 2nd-straight victory this weekend.

Arsenal are set to welcome West Ham United to the Emirates on Saturday night, for the day’s late kick-off.

And, ahead of his latest derby outing, the Gunners boss today held an in-depth interview with the club’s official website.

Arteta was drawn on a whole host of interesting topics, including convincing star man Aubameyang to stay put, the possibility of further arrivals at the Emirates this summer, and David Luiz’s fitness.

One question which perhaps went somewhat under the radar, though, surrounded the spot-kick pecking order at Arsenal at present.

Captain Aubameyang of course proved the north Londoners’ undisputed first-choice last season.

The arrival of Willian at the club this summer, though, threw the situation somewhat up in the air, with the Brazilian having impressed after being entrusted with penalty-taking duties over the course of Chelsea’s run-in in 2019/20.

When drawn on the possibility that Willian’s presence in his squad could therefore have an effect on Arsenal’s pecking order from 12 yards moving forward, though, Arteta was quick to assure that:

‘Auba will start (the season) taking the penalties.’
