Mateo Kovacic to join Chelsea

Following their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield, it would be easy for Chelsea fans to have got down.

But Blues supporters have been handed a major boost on Tuesday by Spanish paper Marca.

Marca report that Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic is about to join Chelsea.

The headline news is that Kovacic has told Real Madrid he no longer wishes to train with Los Blancos.

Moreover, Marca believe that a deal to join Chelsea on loan could be sealed imminently.

Chelsea’s only major outfield recruit this summer has been Jorginho’s move from Napoli.

Bad news for Manchester United

If Kovacic moves to Chelsea, Jose Mourinho is likely to be wound up once again.

Reports in recent days have linked Man United with a move for Kovacic.

Indeed, at the start of the month Marca claimed Man United had tabled a 60 million euro offer for Kovacic.

Why Kovacic wants out of Real Madrid

Since his move to the Bernabeu from Inter Milan in the summer of 2015, Croatian international Kovacic has endured an up-and-down spell with Los Blancos

Kovacic, 24, has failed to lock down a starting spot in the Madrid XI. To be fair, however, he’s had Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro in front of him in the pecking order.

Kovacic raised his profile over the summer as Croatia reached the 2018 World Cup final.

Croatia were beaten 4-2 in the final by France.

Kovacic played five matches at the World Cup. He clocked up 183 minutes during the competition. While Kovacic failed to find the target in the World Cup, he did register one assist.
