Lionel Messi to the Premier League?
Manchester City believe they would be Lionel Messi’s first choice if he decided to leave Barcelona, following his public spat with sporting director Eric Abidal.
Messi has been simply fantastic at Barcelona for over a decade now.
The Argentine needs no introduction, and is widely considered to be possibly the best football player of all time.
However, things haven’t exactly been ideal for him and Barcelona in recent years.
Barcelona last won the Champions League in the 2014/15 season, and were embarrassingly knocked out of the competition by Liverpool last season.
Barcelona’s performances eventually led to the sacking of Ernesto Valverde, and Eric Abidal’s comments about his time at the Camp Nou caused a stir this week.
Could the feud with Abidal push Messi over the edge?
Abidal took part in an interview recently, and suggested that the Blaugrana’s players did not work under Valverde.
He claimed, “a lot of players were not happy and did not work much and there was also a problem with internal communication.”
That prompted a response from Lionel Messi on social media, who screenshotted the interview, and hit back at Abidal.
Messi claimed that the Frenchman should also take responsibility for Valverde’s failure.
Not only that, Messi also called Abidal out, by claiming that he should reveal the names of the players who supposedly didn’t work under Valverde.
Now, Manchester City could supposedly be keeping an eye on the situation.
Man City believe they are ‘first choice’ if Messi leaves
According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester City believe that they are front of the queue if Messi decides to leave Barcelona.
Their report claims: ‘Manchester City believe that they will be first choice if Lionel Messi decides to leave Barcelona.’
Not only that, they could get him for free, too.
As cited in their report, Messi has a clause that allows him to leave the club for nothing at the end of the season.
However, City wouldn’t be the only club looking to sign him if he did leave.
